Do We Brand Ourselves Before We Know Who We Are?

They say clients want to know you—that they’re not just investing in a product but in the person behind it. And while that’s true, what happens when we start branding ourselves before we truly know who we are?
For years, the rule has been to 'be the face of your brand': show up, share your life, and make your work personal. But to build an authentic personal brand, you must first understand your purpose and what God is calling you to do. Otherwise, we’re moving to someone else’s rhythm—mistaking noise for music.
My brand started as a mirror, not a strategy
My journey began with an aesthetic that slowly unfolded into identity. Over the years, I learned what my aesthetic communicated and how it connected to my evolving self. My brand didn’t start as a plan; it became a mirror.
I’ve always been an observer—subtle, intentional, quietly magnetic. That magnetism became the backbone of my brand, including its tone, color story, and approach to light.
At face value, my work may look like pure design—but it has always been personal. Every industry I serve—interior design, food, lifestyle, fashion, health and wellness— are worlds I’m genuinely passionate about. That passion shaped how I see story, light, and image.
A craft that evolves as you do
As I evolved, so did my visual language. Natural and artificial light became muses—translating emotion into atmosphere. Wedding photography sharpened that practice; people began booking me because they saw themselves in my perspective.
That responsibility taught me this: when your work resonates, it’s because your essence has made itself visible.
As I grew, my brand identity shifted too—bright and modern, then bold and refined, then warmed with earthy tones. Each transition reflected a chapter of self-discovery.
Start before you’re ready — but pause long enough to know who’s showing up
I believe in starting before you’re ready, yes—but equally important is pausing long enough to understand who you’re putting out there.
Branding without self-awareness is like shooting in bad light; the image is there, but it’s not always worth keeping.
When you know who you are, visual clarity follows and brings with it consistency. Consistency attracts alignment—clients, collaborators, and conversations that are meant for you. Showing up stops feeling forced and begins to feel like flow. And the more you show up in truth, the more trust you build.
Personal evolution → Brand evolution
My brand and personal journey are deeply intertwined.
Recently, my love for food has deepened—not just as a lifestyle pleasure, but as a reflection of self. I’ve been leaning into homesteading: preserving, pickling, planting, and cooking with intention. What fulfills you personally always finds its way into your creative work.
This organic rhythm influenced my photography, too— putting into the forefront, more documentary-inspired, atmospheric, and emotionally honest storytelling.
Whether capturing a chef in motion, a designer mid-creation, or a brand in bloom, I use light and space as storytelling tools. The environment becomes an accessory to the narrative.
We are all in a season of becoming
Visual branding is storytelling—and we’re all in a season of becoming.
Every chapter holds lessons worthy of reflection—in life and in what we create.
When we align who we are with what we show, we don’t just build brands.
We build trust.
We build connection.
We build community.
Maybe the real work isn’t creating a perfect brand—but one that is becoming true to us or itself.
Don’t let the weight of social media overwhelm you. Take one step at a time—and trust that clarity will come when you do.
